About the project

I titled this EP project “I See Black Light” -- which were Victor Hugo’s last words on earth. I've been obsessed with Les Miserables for years. I've seen the musical twice, the movie dozens of times, and have pored over the book. I love Hugo's genius in reflecting the full range of the human experience. I wanted to capture a similar range in this project -- with six songs covering aspects of our emotional lives as human beings -- from despair to joy, judgment to redemption, and heartbreak to resilience.

"Into the Light" and "Pont Au Change" are directly inspired by Les Miserables. "Into the Light" expresses the voice of the bishop who forgives Jean Valjean for stealing silver from the parish church. The bishop challenges Valjean, an ex-convict, to go forth and put his life to good use. Valjean's moral transformation leads him to commit his life to helping the poor and oppressed, and his devotion shapes the entire story of Les Mis.

"Pont Au Change" is from the perspective of Javert, a corrupt police officer who believes that the law is the ultimate authority. After Valjean shows him mercy, Javert’s worldview collapses and he commits suicide by jumping off le pont au change in Paris. By musically retelling this story, this lamentation, I mirror Javert’s devastation in the melody of the song by putting it in a minor key and vocally mimicking cries in the chorus.

"Awake", "Gold Rush", and "Hell or High Water" were all written at the Interlochen Center for the Arts Singer/Songwriter program over two summers. "Awake" is about my own awareness of the oppression in the world and recognizing that "ignorance is bliss, but it's not power." "Gold Rush" is about our personal decision to really go for what we want in our lives, despite the opinions of other people. "Hell or High Water" is a story about the decision to be free, despite whatever obstacles are in our path.

I loved the process of producing this EP. It was an amazing experience to work with an awesome team of musicians, producers, sound engineers, and industry mentors. I learned a lot about leadership and musical orchestration as I led the team in the process of tracking drums, bass, piano, guitar, vocals, and other instruments over several recording sessions. I also learned a lot about the value of mentors. My producer, sound engineer, and music industry mentors pushed me to grow exponentially as an artist. Most importantly, I experienced the exhilarating joy of watching my creative vision come together, shared with other human beings who are each riding the wave of emotions from the music. The profound joy I feel as a songwriter serves as a testament to the unmatched power of creative energy.

And yes, in case you are wondering, I am planning to record more projects in the future! I appreciate your support!
